Hi everybody!
My colleague Dr. Thomas Wirth, who is the professor in charge of all media at the Berufsakademie Mosbach, tested several options concerning the handling of pictures in WordPress and now recommends the following:
1. First reduce the size of your pictures before uploading them into the system. Currenty the files have about 3 MB on the average and therefore more than 30% of the available disk space in WordPress for our blog is already occupied. Most image processing programs have options like “picture – reduce size” or the like. Otherwise ask a friend who has experience in image editing.
2. Use the “Upload – File” dialog right under the text editor window in order to include a picture into your text. (The Browse option will not work until a file is already stored in the file system).
3. The default options “Thumbnail” and “File” should not be changed.
4. Click on “Send to Editor” in order to load the preview picture (“thumbnail”) into the text editor window. Note that the position of a new picture is always on top of the text (Internet Explorer). In Mozilla Firefox the picture is inserted an the cursor position. However, the position of a picture can easily be changed via “drag and drop” or “cut and paste” in both browsers.
5. You can use the “Upload File” dialog repeatedly to add more pictures.
Kristins posting was established in this way. Click on the small thumbnail pictures within the text to see a larger version!!
Good luck and have fun blogging,

This Tuesday it was time to say good bye to Berlin. But before this, we wanted to visit the state embassy of Baden-Württemberg. We all met before our hostel with our luggage and were already ready to leave, when we realized that two of us were missing. After 20 minutes of waiting we were all together again but then we missed our bus, so we had to wait another ten minutes for our bus to arrive and Mrs Englisch became a little bit nervous because she really wanted to be on time because we were there to represent our wonderful BA
When we arrived at the state embassy we stored our luggage somewhere and then we were finally ready for our last “Highlight” of Berlin.
Our guide first showed us an exhibition of Helmut Kohl and his wife, which was quite interesting. Especially because you could see a lot of pictures of the life of Mr Kohl. After this we visited the famous garden of the state embassy, where all famous politicians meet every year for the famous summer party. But it was very cold that day, so we were quite happy when we went back inside.
Our tour guide told us that besides of the apartment of Mr Oettinger there is a whole floor with guest rooms, which are used quite often from different politicians when they’re in Berlin.
We were also allowed to visit the “ Kaminzimmer “ of the state embassy, which was quite nice with it’s huge tiled stove and the different chairs from the different wine regions of Baden-Württemberg.
Another nice place which was shown to us was the library. That day we were lucky because Mr Oettinger was not in the embassy, so we were allowed to visit the library which is connected to the apartment of Mr Oettinger. Besides all this we could see different sculptures from different artists.
Hello everybody!!!!
I know, it is last day today, to write about my topic, I hope it is not too late, but you know, a lot of things to do now…. so, lets start.
On Saturday afternoon after finishing our bus tour through the whole town and visiting bonbon machinerie we walked together to Friedrichstrasse, a major shopping street in central Berlin.
Friedrichstraße is the most legendary street in the whole city and combines the tradition of the “Golden Twenties” with the architecture of the New Berlin. In the Twenties, the 3.5 km long street was the location for pleasure palaces, cafés, theatres and variety theatres such as the famous “Wintergarten”.
After the division of the city, the Wall also cut through Friedrichstraße, where the famous Checkpoint Charlie was located at the border of the districts of Kreuzberg and Mitte and thus at the border of East and West Berlin….we saw checkpoint charlie during the tour in the morning….
First, we just walked down the street, crossed few other streets till we came to Gendarmenmarkt. The Gendarmenmarkt is known as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Originally it was created as a market place at the end of the 17th century – Linden Markt. Funny situation was, that few of us didn´t listen and we didn´t know where we are, but after few minutes we got it….it was Gendarmenmarkt.
The most interesting about this square was, that there are two seemingly identical churches opposite each other, The Franzözischer Dom and the Deutscher Dom. The Konzerthaus or Concert Hal, the third building that surrounds the square is the most recent building on the Gendarmenmarkt. In the center of the square a statue of famous German poet Friedrich Schiller is situated. It is very fascinating, when you imagine standing in the centre of the square and seeing the same building on both sides. It´s reminded me The Museum of Natural Sciences in Viena, where the statue of Maria Theresia is surrounded by two identical museum buildings. But I have to say, that I really don´t know, which one was which.( I mean the two Doms)
During the way to Gendarmenmarkt we were passing Gallerie Lafayette. We didn´t go in….no time. But after seeing galerie Lafayette in Paris during our trip, I really wanted to see also this one in Berlin. I was curious how does it look like inside and want to compare it to the paris one. So later on, after visiting Gendarmenmarkt when we split, Ling, Vesna , Jeevan and me decided to see this famous shopping center.
The Lafayette Galleries are the only building with angle rounded in this district with the streets traced with the chalk line. The outside and the interior of the store can only surprise the visitor( and I can say, it did) transparency and reflection of the frontages out of glass, lines fluid and roundness of the forms.
“Paris in Berlin is found at this modern department store.“ The opening of this store has made Friedrichstrasse, the “street of spies” in the Cold War era, one of the most fashionable shopping areas in eastern Europe
Galeries Lafayette in Mitte carries elegant, brand-name French designs, as well as expensive perfumes, colognes, shoes, and accessories. In addition, the department store is known for its fabulous basement floor, which features gourmet delights like exotic produce, imported wines, premium meats, and other delicacies.
Like in Paris, the cosmetics department with most of brands was situated on the ground-flour…. that was something for us, girls, especially for Vesna… I am sure, you can imagine the pleasure, when we found out, that one of the brands offered for all women possibility to do make up on their own, but with their cosmetics, so you can choose what you like….it was great
I think I can say the brand, it was Shiseido…actually, you see it. We spent quite a long time here…maybe more than one hour, trying almost everything and I must say, that Jeevan was very very patient….waiting for us…
The sparkling glass interior of the Galeries Lafayette department store on Berlin’s Friedrichstraße
when i compare berlins gallery with one in Paris, they are totally different….the idea is the same, four or six flours full of famous brand-stores, but this one in berlin is more modest than in paris…the architecture is different, new….but i liked it.
After seeing galerie lafayette we walked to Unter den Linden street and we continued with sightseeing… ooh, I forgot, the only one shop that we went in on the Friedriechsrasse was H&M, of course:)))))
…Berlin is a great city!!!!!!
and we really enjoyed time spent there…..

ps: i miss u a lot….
ROARRRRSS !! HI guys! miss me? ahahahhahahaha i miss you guys lots!.
I can’t tell you how relief I am to do this topic, after all, shopping is a natural talent for *ahem women.
Kurfurstendamm, known locally as Ku’damm is one of the most famous avenues in Berlin, The Street takes its name from the former Kurfürsten (Electors) of the Holy Roman Empire, and became the most commercialized street in West Berlin when it was separated into East and West Berlin.
In the lively upper part of Kurfürstendamm and its extension, Tauentzienstraße, there are countless of departmental stores, mega fashion chains (like H&M) and small stores of unique finds. The lower part is quieter, filled with designer stores residing in magnificent head-turner buildings.
The famous street also houses Europe’s biggest departmental store – KaDeWe, which offers a variety of international designer labels and wide assortments of products from electronics to food and to kitchen supplies. Speaking about food, I’m glad that we heeded Miss Englisch advice to visit the small food paradise on the top floor, my god it is entirely too spacious! All that entire floor just dedicated to food? G.O.S.H it’s food heaven. I love it! All that schoko and sugar sweet pastries.. yummy! Alright I apologized for digressing as I tend to be a little bit irrational when it comes to fooood. Yummy yummy. My mind is muddled by the pastries – again.
My biggest KaDeWe finding of the day?
MY BEST FRIENDS A.K.A INSTANT NOODLESS !! AWW I missed you all !
Tom yam, spicy prawn, Laksa flavours! Bring it on!!
By the way, if you really really want to go in KaDeWe, please stick to your friends at all times, like superglue, because… you might get lost in there hehe.. no joke!
Enough said, let’s venture out and hit the local stores in the street! Starting with H&M!! 5 H&Ms in kufurstendamm can you imagine that? Yes yes I know, H&M again?? Yes dear friends, how can we not visit H&M? The Swedish fashion chain is my new found addict, and it is hard for me not to leave H&M with any purchase at all. In fact- it is a MUST to pay homage to my favourite high end fashion chain in Europe. I can hear Jeevan’s imaginary groan whenever we decided to visit our favorite store hah! Don’t worry guys, NO FEAR! Because there are a lot of cafes around! It is a good exercise if you guys decided to follow the girls, why not? It is a good trip to trim down your tummy. Tsk tsk
Oh yeah there are a lot of other stores around, like those tourist shops? All of them, to my utter fascination, sell small pieces of the Berlin Wall as momento. It is fake? A fraud? Yeah probably, how many walls can you knock down to sell it to the public? Hehe
But you know, nothing beats H&M, and of course! Nike~ (courtesy of MinYi) the shoe stores are wonderful too, just that it is albeit on the pricey end. Kristin bought a pair of lovely polka dot shoes in a shoe store, and no doubt – burned a hole in her pocket.
Jolly time we spent in Berlin
Well just a few friendly suggestions to fellow shopaholics
I enjoyed the Berlin trip a lot! Thanks to all the teachers who organized this class trip.

Hey my dear! Remember the day we visited tremendous Park Sanssouci,of course you do. Something so special and beautiful is hard to forget and specially when you share those moments with people you like,… well when we finished this trip we had free afternoon and together with Adriana and Damir we set our direction to find the place near Wedding area to search for The KRYOLAN factory. We changed few trains on the way there and the time was passing by soooo fast,… I was so looking forward and at the same time I felt inpatient,… because the shop was open only untill four and we really had to hurry up and because of that we had some extra adrenalin in our venues, specially me. When we get off the last train, we immediately went to our famous “Papierstraße 10”, I will always keep this address in my mind. This street was very close, but the time was no so friendly with as and we needed to hurry up. getting closer to our goal, the clock was almost four so the last part of the way it was runned… but can u imagine the smile on my face when I looked the sign KRYOLAN…
when I came in, I got lost… it was small room but full with make up…. wau, so many different eye shadows and the smile on my face, (check the pictures down)…or just ask Adriana and Damir… but this was really very exciting for me, because I was really looking forward to see it and of course to buy some make up products….why?
Few years ago when I have done my make up courses, the professional part was done exactly with this brand and I really had a wish for long time to get it,… so chance to visit Berlin combined with chance to buy this make up too,… yeaaaah… this can not be more perfect…. I will post in future some make done with those crazy colours… I promise!!!
About Kryolan
(I will be short, because not everybody is interested in make up)
KRYOLAN is a specialized manufacturer of professional make-up serving theater, film, and television around the globe for more than 50 years. The Kryolan team is dedicated to all those having special needs, if for the theatrical stage, movie or television productions, face or body painting. And because high quality of product we can use it in every day life and for some special make up,… like I will… I promise I will post picture of my own make up faces when I do some, but here down are some to see what can be done… I could write more about it, but this is not so much connected to our Berlin so…
this is what can be done with Kryolan….click to see enlarged pictures

After the guided bus tour through Potsdam we had enough free time for shopping and other things. In Berlin are many shopping facilities like the famous KaDeWe, the Arkaden, Kurfürstendamm and others. If clothes, shoes, jewels, accessories, foods, music and books, in Berlin you can find everthing and therefore it’s a paradise for every woman.
The Kaufhaus des Westens (Departement Store of the West, commonly abbreviated KaDeWe) is a departement store, the largest in all of continental Europe. With over 60,000 square meters of floor space and more than 380,000 articles available. Here you can find everthing you want, really every article, actually articles and goods from all over the world. So it is an absolute must for everybody to visit this unique store. It attracts 40,000 to 50,000 visitors every day. But an important aspect are the prices. They are really high and therefore you should bring a ful moneybag when you want to buy something. The store was originally founded in 1905 by Adolf Jandorf, who persuaded the famous architect Emil Schaudt to bulid this store. It opened in 1907. The sixth and seventh floor (added in the early 1990s) are entirely devoted to food, and advertisements tout the place as having two football fields of food. The sixth floor is called delicatessen and is famous for its wide variety of food and beverages. On the pictures you can see the KaDeWe and a cutout from the sixth floor.
Another important shopping alternative is the Arkaden Shopping Centre in the middle of Berlin. It’a an exclusive centre on the Potsdamer Place. In three floors are more than 130 shops with an product range vary from clothes, accessories to electronic, wellness and foods. Perfect for the shopping breaks are the coffee bars, bars and restaurants in the hall which looks like an avenue. A nice location in this area is the Sony Centre which is also located on the Potsdamer Place. On the pictures below you can see the Arkaden and the Sony Centre.
The Kurfürstendamm, locally known as Ku’damm, is one of the most famous avenues in Berlin. The street takes its name from the former Kurfürsten (Electors) of the Holy Roman Empire. This very broad and long boulevard can be considered the Champs-Elysées of Berlin – full of shops, houses, hotels and restaurants. In particular most important famous designers have their shops there, as well as some car manufacturers’ show rooms. When Berlin was separated into East and West Berlin, the Kurfürstendamm became the leading commercial street in West Berlin. It starts near Bahnhof Zoo (a railway station) at the Zoologischer Garten, near the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, and runs through Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. This street is always filled with crows. It is nice to see the big shops, which have really another size as the same stores in other cities. One example is the impressive Esprit-store. And there isn’t only one shop of every company, no there are two or more. Especially there are many H&M stores.
The above-mentioned shopping facilities aren’t the only ones in Berlin. There are also the Friedrich-Street with its well-known designer stores, the Charlottenburg Savigny-Place and Europecentre, the Hackescher Market and many others.
I always start writing with argumentation why I am writing about certain topic. So, the question here is easy; why did I choose to write about Berlin – a melting pot?
Before coming here to Germany I knew something about German, about Second World War, the things which had happened after world war, or just to summarize this knowledge – I have known only facts and figures. But as every curious student who wants to know a bit more about history, the nature of people who were involved into this kind of terror, who lead the resilience, who were leaders of the regime at the time, I had a perfect opportunity to see the circumstance behind it.
And after the war, which totally demolished Berlin, there apparently was the hope and will to set Berlin to one of the most shining cities on the world.
On our “short” trip to Berlin I observed the people, either while drinking “Berliner weißen”, either from the perfect public transportation system. About first I have to say that it tastes good, but what I like is the brand, the city of Berlin has its own type of beer, which is a very good marketing strategy and deviates from all other cities which named beer just after their city. And the difference is; they added the beer some substance witch makes the beer turn green or red color. And it is served in a something like chalice and with a straw.
About the second thing; public transportation – have not seen so efficient public transportation all over the world. Punctual, relatively clean and quite cosy. But from time to time you can still here some disapproval from the local because the bus was maybe a minute or two late; but that is just German punctuality.
When a foreigner is driving with these vehicles all over time (in my case also involuntarily), can see a palette of different nationalities, cultures, figures, etc. Why does Berlin attract so much people from all over the world?
I was not expecting to see so many different nationalities on one place (Berlin has only 3.5 billion of inhabitants). Especially is this interesting theme, if you look closer the history of this city. Berlin was the capital of Hitler’s regime, so it is obvious that the conquer of Berlin will be a symbolic act. And it was. The first came there soldiers of Soviet Red Army and as a symbol they hang out Soviet flag on the top of the Reichstag – German parliament. The Soviets had after war jurisdiction over the Berlin city. The rest was divided among three allies France, USA, and Great Britain. Since the war ended the Berlin was an island on territory which was under Soviet influence. And the differences among the western and eastern part of Berlin was driven by politics, so they build a wall in 1963, which hermetically closed any connections east to west part of town. The authority on east, Soviet side had built a wall in excuse that they are defending the nation from the west corrupt influence.
And all the years of tragedy ended 9. November 1989. The inducement was a press conference held by German socialistic party where Günter Schabowski in an interview answered the question from a reporter, when the borders to the west will be open. And his answer was, now, immediately, this moment. This was a moment when Berliners ran to the wall and with high anticipations waited that wall would be taken down. And it was.
As a person walks today over Berlin, can see how the western part is more advanced, you can feel the free spirit, openness to other cultures, etc. When a person is walking over the eastern part there is a lot of construction in progress, people are more closed, retained. That kind of behavior can be felt in mature inhabitants of eastern part; those are the people who actually lived in a terror held by communist party all those years. The life during that time must have been quite hard, considering that the liberators converted into tyrants.
It must be hard to change your believes over night, where state take care almost for all your problems, health insurance, job, pension, etc.
Young people who are living in Berlin I am sure that they feel more relaxed environment, than their parents maybe 20 years ago. It would be maybe hard to say that they are going thru transition process still; there was 18 years from the fall of East Germany. Maybe for them it was hard to face reality in economic way. And if the economic situation is not in progress, for this people it is very hard to accustom.
As we walked over Berlin I got the feeling that this is city for young ambitious people. When you spend in a Berlin a bit more than just one or two days, and slowly you understand the city, you see that the limit is only the sky. Young people, maybe especially those who lived before in East part, and were just old enough that they understood what was going on, and if this will continue, in what kind of system will they have to live. For them was opening the border one of the best and most crucial opportunities which they will have in their life; this is my opinion. And why? If are walking on the over the east part there is a lot of construction going on; just if you take a look on Alexander Platz; the whole square is under constriction. From what they learned in the past, how their future will look like, they are eyewitness now to totally different structure and especially totally different mentality.
Today Berlin is a melting pot of nations, who are all living in a symbiosis. From the French, Dutch, Jews, Turks, etc. And that is not all. If you take a walk in Berlin Mitte where you can find all shopping spree lovers and gourmet fans you can find from all nationalities all over the world. When we were walking around (KaDeWe, Friedrich Straße, Oranienburger Str.) it can be seen architecture ( what had left from the war ) from the past and future, Friedrich Straße is built on a US role model; where the lanes for the traffic are by side and in the middle is a park, and a lane for pedestrians. You can see this kind of streets also in countries which US had a quite big influence on them.
In the evening you have perfect choice for going out for all the subcultures which you can find in Berlin; and you can find them a lot. Such a difference in styles which can be seen on the street is really something that impresses human. And everybody can enjoy and live their own life style without being bothered at all.
And for the end of course a quote is needed (which describes Berlin in one sentence);
“Berlin combines the culture of New York, the traffic system of Tokyo, the nature of Seattle, and the historical treasures of, well, Berlin.”
(Hiroshi Motomura, US Law professor, 2004)
On Monday, 2. April 2007 the group of students from Mosbach University went to visit Potsdam, the capital city of the federal state of Brandenburg in Germany, just outside of Berlin. It was beautiful sunshine day and we were walking through the Park Sanssouci, the summer palace of Frederick II. “Oou, this is all mine”, said Frederic, French student who was with us. And then he started telling us the history about himself. “I am the sun of Frederick William I. I was the King of Prussia and everybody knows me as a Frederick the Great (German: Friedrich der Grosse). My childhood was spent in rigorous military training and education. At the age of eighteen I failed when trying to flee my father’s territories accompanied by my friend Lieutenant von Katte. We were caught and I was forced to watch Katte’s execution. For a period I was kept imprisoned and, later which is even worth, I had to accept Princess Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel as my bride, because my father forced me to marry her, even if I really do not love her… I studied music and French literature, my hobbys are writing and composing. I earned a great reputation as a military commander in the War of the Austrian Succession”.
During walking through the western side of the Sanssouci royal park in Potsdam, Frederic showed us The New Palace (German: Neues Palais) which is considered to be the last great Prussian baroque palace. The building of the palace commenced at the end of the Seven Years’ War, to celebrate Prussia’s success. The palace demonstrates the power and glories of Prussia attributing it as fanfaronade, and excess of splendor in marble, stone and gilt. “For me, the New Palace is not a principle residence, but a display for the reception of important people, like you. You are my friends and you can choose between 200 rooms, I have also four principal gathering rooms and even a theather and a concert room. So we can have a party together in this palace, but later because first you should see my summer residence too. I call it the palace of Sanssouci, which translates from French as “Without Cares“. Sanssouci is the most important work of Northern German rococo (“Frederician Rococo“) developed under Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. Palace has just ten principal rooms and it is built on the brow of a terraced hill at the centre of the park. While admiring the view from the palace of Sanssouci, Frederic told us that he own a lot of beautiful building, mainly located in Berlin, such as the Beriln State Opera, the Royal Library (today the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin), St. Hedwig‘s Cathedral, the French and German Cathedrals on the Gendarmenmarkt, and Prince Henry’s Palace (now the site of Humboldt University) but however, he prefer spending his time here in Potsdam where he can escape from reality. He said: “It is a place that would die with me” and at that point we sow the grave where was written Friedrich der Grosste from 1712 – 1786. We continued the way back to Berlin… Welcome back to reality, Frederic…Mosbach can be fun too
I enjoyed this fabulous day full of imagination the most. Well, the nightlife in Berlin was also good…but this part will be described by another student…
Thank you BA for this wonderful trip. We won’t forget it, never. Taking group pictures will always remind us of Berlin.
